This past Sunday (May 18th) the Lac qui Parle County Historical Society hosted an open house program to show the community the new displays we are opening this spring. The program officially began at 2:00 but the museum was opened at 1:00 to give visitors some time to view our new displays. The program began with a few words from Curator Barb Redepenning and Historical Society President Karen Tilbury recapping the recent events at the museum and the process of creating the new displays. Lynn Zimmerman then took over the microphone to talk about his experiences in the nearly 30 years he spent working for the Cargill elevator in Madison. Cookies and refreshments were served after the program.
The main display that was unveiled is based around the various businesses in the county that use locally grown agriculture products. This includes the many elevators in the county along with the many mills and creameries that have served the area’s farmers and residents. This display features stories, timelines, and other information related to these businesses along with many photographs and artifacts.Â
The other display we are opening covers the million pound catch brought in by the Piechowski Fish Co. in 1960. The Piechowski Fish Co. was started by Adolph Piechowski and his brothers in 1945 and ran out of Browns Valley, MN for more than 60 years. The Piechowski’s have brought in millions of lbs. of fish from many lakes in the area using nets and seine fishing techniques to get under the ice and haul in fish. The display features some of the tools and equipment that the fishermen used along with pictures, fish mounts, and information on the Piechowski Fish Co. and seine fishing.Â
We here at the museum are very proud of the new displays and the close to three months of research and work that went into creating them. The displays will stay open throughout the summer and fall so feel free to head over to the museum sometime to come and see our new exhibits.
